Al-Shuwaihatiya Archaeological Site
Al-Shuwaihatiyah Archaeological Site is one of the ancient archaeological sites in the Al-Jawf region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is located 45 km northwest of the city of Sakaka. Some of the archaeological finds date back to the Oldowan civilization in the Paleolithic era 1.3 million years ago.
A number of stone tools were found there, classified as dating back to the pre-Acheulean civilization. Among the artifacts discovered at the site are: stone knives, hammers, and arrowheads. On the outskirts of the site is a small plateau with rock drawings of camels, ibex, and hunting scenes, and a picture of three men riding camels, along with straight geometric lines.
In 1439 AH/2018 AD, the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (at that time) approved the survey of the Shuwaihatiya archaeological site, with the aim of monitoring archaeological phenomena and data, paying attention to archaeological sites, creating tourist routes in the region that serve tourism development, and adding new job and investment opportunities that contribute to economic activity in the region.
